Meet a Teen Who Loves One-on-One Time: A youth waiting this December

December 19, 2018 by Staff Contributor

Sherakey smiles with pigtails in her hair against a grey background.Sherakey just turned 16 years old! She waits in foster care for a caring adoptive family this December.

With a combination of goofiness and sarcasm, Sherakey loves to make people laugh. She also loves to talk. She thrives in moments when she can get one-on-one attention, it doesn’t matter what you’re doing as long as your spending quality time together. She enjoys playing Uno and Wii games and also had a lot of fun at a recent matching event where everyone played board games—it was right up her alley. She often will talk about how she wants to belong to a family.

“I’m looking for my ‘warm spot,’ a home and family where I am safe, valued and loved.” – Sherakey

Sherakey is a huge fan of arts and crafts. Last year she would spend much of her free time knitting scarves. She would give them to people as gifts or try to sell them to make a little money. For Christmas, she asked for arts and craft supplies, along with boots, socks, a back pack, and a Target gift card.

Sherakey’s adoptive family may look a little different than the “typical family.” Sherakey is learning life skills right now but she needs parent(s) who are willing to care for her for her lifetime. Her adoptive parent(s) should be open to parenting from an alternative setting—possibly in a scenario where Sherakey lives in a facility that offers life-skills support while the adoptive parent(s) provide emotional support through phone calls, visits and holidays together. It would be best if she is the only or youngest child in a home. She would do well in a family that likes to chill at home, enjoying movie nights or the simple moments together. Her family must be open to maintaining contact with her current provider and extended family but this does not require her adoptive family live in the area.

Details to Note

The majority of costs to Minnesota clients adopting a child under Minnesota state guardianship are covered by a contract with the Minnesota Department of Human Services. If you live outside of Minnesota, please contact us about applicable fees.

Meet oTHER WAITING CHILDREN

During December we are advocating for 12 children who currently wait for families. We appreciate any time you take to get to know these children and consider whether your family, or a family you know, could be theirs.
