Sibling relationships come in all shapes and forms, but there is one common trait that you find between siblings again and again: a love and dedication to each other. Promise and Omari are two teens currently waiting for adoptive parents in Minnesota foster care who have a very close relationship and love for one another. But their need for a family may be different from what you first envision.
Omari is a fun and happy 16 year old. He loves staying active and playing sports, as well as going to the movies or the Mall of America. He frequently listens to pop music and likes singing and dancing. He was able to meet Minnesota Twins player, Joe Mauer, and loved the experience. Omari is happiest when he is out of the house and making new friends. He especially likes going to church, being involved in groups and likes to feel like he belongs.
Promise is a caring and dedicated 17 year old. She is outgoing, funny, smart, strong-willed and determined. She can be helpful, enjoys attention and likes to be independent. It takes time for Promise to get to know and trust people. She wants freedom, trust and responsibility. She loves spending time in the community, being with friends and others her own age and going to activities. She enjoys going shopping at the mall, listening to hip hop music and watching reality TV shows. She has big dreams and is driven to achieve them: she dreams of becoming a model and she also plans on becoming a trauma surgeon.
Promise and Omari would do well with an active family with experience parenting teenagers. They would need a family with flexible styles as the two youth would need different parenting styles. Omari would thrive with parents who provide structure and support and help guide him towards independence as he is almost 17. On the other hand, Promise may not need as much structure as she has already established her independence, but would shine in a family that is happy to help her when she comes for advice and to provide her a place to call “home” for holidays, visits and other family events. Following adoption, Promise and Omari would need to maintain regular contact with their grandfather.
details To note
Because Promise and Omari wait in Minnesota foster care, only Minnesota residents are eligible to adopt them. The majority of costs to clients adopting a child under Minnesota state guardianship are covered by a contract with the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
