A school-aged African American boy in foster care smiles with braided hair.

ONLINE | 12:00 P.m. – 1:00 p.m. CT

Speakers: Melissa Taylor, Owner and Educator at Minneapolis Beauty Salon; Diana Mena, CH/LSS Adoption Worker; and Jazzmin Moore, CH/LSS Child-Specific Recruiter

When you agree to foster and adopt, there are so many things to worry about. Often natural hair and skin care can become an afterthought. But for transracial adoptive and foster parents, understanding the care needs of the children in your home is so important. Join us to learn the basics of natural hair and skin care, and the essentials for styling your little one’s hair. We will discuss the importance of hair and skin care in the African-American community, products, hair typing, and easy styles you can feel confident doing.

This webinar is ideal for someone with limited experience managing textured hair i.e. multiracial families, foster parents and transracial adoptive parents. You’ll gain the confidence to wash, detangle and create simple hairstyles.

About the Speaker: A natural problem solver, Melissa Taylor is a hairstylist, mother, and entrepreneur. Melissa believes that hair is fabric and should be addressed based on texture, not ethnicity. In 2011 she founded The Beauty Lounge Minneapolis (The Beauty Lounge), a salon based on that idea and the mission “All Hair is Good Hair”. Since then, The Beauty Lounge has grown into The Twin Cities Multicultural Hair Destination, serving a diverse clientele from celebrities to toddlers of various ethnic backgrounds. Salons are traditionally homogeneous spaces where the practitioner and clients are usually of the same ethnicity. Melissa, has decided to combat this challenge head on and has identified a three tiered approach to addressing the issue: Education, Product, and Salon Culture. She teaches classes to professional hairstylists, parents and clients with the goal of helping individuals have a more positive relationship with textured hair.

Certificates of attendance will be made available to attendees. This webinar will be recorded. A link to the recording will be sent to all individuals who register for the live event within 24 hours of the webinar completion. The recording will also be posted on chlss.org/webinars.
