To say that 15-year-old Jahnia loves music is an understatement. Attending choir class is the highlight of her school day. She got a taste of the stage last year in her high school’s musical and now hopes to be more involved in the drama program or to perform in a show choir where she can sing and dance.
During their visits, Jahnia and her child-specific recruiter Brittany will drive to get something to eat while listening to popular artists with impressive vocals like Cardi B, Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Tori Kelly, or Bruno Mars. “I’ve never listened to music so loudly in my car before,” explains Brittany. Lately, Jahnia’s been on a Panda Express kick, where she’ll get the honey walnut shrimp with fried rice. Then they’ll head to the library to pick out some new CDs—especially the NOW CDs. “She’s a lot of fun to be around. She’s got an infectious personality,” shares Brittany.
“A family is someone who is there to support and help you through anything. They love you no matter what.” – Jahnia
It is very important to Jahnia that she is heard and listened to. She wants to know that her opinion is being considered. She’s very aware that she’s been through a lot, so she wants to be treated by others with an understanding of the life experience that has given her more wisdom and insight than other kids her age.
Jahnia would like an open-minded family that is patient. She enjoys going to church and likes the community aspect of church, so a family that attends church may be a good fit. She really wants to feel like a “normal kid,” and just like the typical teen she needs reminders about doing homework and laundry. She would do best as the only or youngest child in the home. It will be key for her adoptive family to help her navigate and maintain her birth family relationships. She is open to moving, but would prefer to live in a metro area.
