Bringing Peace and Connection to Mealtimes: Tackle Picky Eating

Presented by: Katja Rowell M.D.

Length of webinar: 1.25 hours

Are you tired of dreading dinner? Frustrated that everything you’ve tried to help your child’s picky eating hasn’t helped? Think your only choice is to negotiate or fight over every bite or give up and just serve a handful of ‘safe’ foods? You are not alone, and there is hope!

One in ten American children eats such a limited variety or amount of food that it interferes with physical, social, and/or emotional development (“extreme” picky eating). With diagnoses and labels like “failure to thrive,” selective eating, ARFID (avoidant restrictive food intake disorder), sensory disorders, and just plain picky, families are struggling.

Foster and adopted children often face additional challenges and difficult beginnings. This workshop will help parents understand why children are struggling and importantly, share relationship-building strategies to move forward and support their child’s appetite and intake.

  • Learn why rewards, bribing, and power struggles can make picky eating worse and what to do instead.
  • Learn relationship-building tips and phrases to neutralize power struggles.
  • Explore and respond to your child’s sensory preferences and temperament.
  • Help your child self-regulate and tune in to appetite and fullness cues.
  • Support nutrition while waiting for picky eating to improve.

Citizenship & Adoption: Completing All the Steps

Presented by: Susan Walker, MSW, LISW, Director of Post Adoption & Education

Length of webinar: 1 hour

CH/LSS regularly gets inquiries from adoptees and parents of adopted minors about their status as a U.S. citizen and how to obtain proof of citizenship. Often the question comes up at the most inconvenient time such as when applying for a passport, driver’s license or college financial aid (FAFSA), accepting a job offer or shipping out for active military service. The panic sets in when you are asked for “proof of citizenship.” It can be scary when a birth certificate, court decree, or even a passport are not sufficient forms of proof.

When The Child Citizenship Act of 2000 was implemented, many parents adopting internationally mistakenly thought all adoptees were afforded automatic citizenship with little or no further action needed. In truth, the steps needed upon their return home depend on the country laws, type of visa, adoptee’s birth year and other factors. This webinar helps untangle the questions around who is covered by The Child Citizenship Act, the distinction between being a citizen and having proof of citizenship, and why it matters.

Openness in Foster Care Adoption

Presented by: Amy Mische, MSW, LISW, CH/LSS; Sarah Jane, Adoptive Mother; and Sophie, Adult Adoptee

Length of webinar: 1 hour

Openness in foster care adoption can take many forms. Children adopted through foster care many times benefit from remaining in contact with siblings, birth parents, extended first family or foster parents. Because each child’s history is unique, the open relationships created in foster care are equally unique. In this free webinar, hear directly from those who live this experience through their open adoption relationships. We explore the benefits and real-life experiences of openness in adoption, how to support openness when direct contact isn’t possible, and what to do when openness is not a viable option.

Rallying Support for Your Adoption from Family and Friends

Presented by: Amy Fogel, MSW, LGSW, CH/LSS; and Erin Heisler, MA, CH/LSS

Length of webinar: 1 hour

You’ve decided to adopt and are filled with giddy joy and nervous apprehension for what the future has in store. In your excitement, you tell your family members about your plans. Instead of smiles and support, you’re met with questions and doubt. Even if their concern is coming from a place of love, reactions such as this bring unwanted frustration.

There are different ways that family members may show hesitation surrounding your adoption. Many times, through conversations and education, adoptive families are able to help others better understand adoption so that they may too join in the excitement. In this webinar, which is rooted in strategies from Elisabeth O’Toole’s In on It: What Adoptive Parents Would Like You To Know About Adoption, we will discuss:

  • Various ways to approach adoption conversations depending on the individuals who are hesitant—life partner, children, grandparents, extended family, and friends
  • How to identify and consider the perspective of everyone involved
  • Common misperceptions of adoption and how to dispel these myths
  • Common questions you may be asked and respectful ways to respond
  • How you can welcome hesitant individuals into your adoption circle
  • The importance of garnering the support of others for you and your future child
  • When it is necessary to forego adoption plans or stop interactions with family members/friends

Relative and Kinship Adoption: What You Need to Know

Presented by: Heidi Wiste, Director of Domestic Adoption, CH/LSS, MSW; Janet Salo, Family Support Specialist at LSS; Diane Stang, Supervisor of Foster Care and Adoption at Dakota County; Rebecca, Adoptive Mother

Length of webinar: 1.25 hours

When county or tribal service agencies place children in foster care, the goal is to help their parent(s) and to safely reunify the family as soon as possible. When reunification is no longer an option, agencies will then work to find families, including relatives and kin, to permanently care for the children. This is known as relative adoption or kinship adoption.

Many individuals may find themselves entering a relative/kinship adoption with little notice and little knowledge of what steps it requires. This webinar aims to help answer your questions. During this hour, we address why relative and kinship adoptions are important and how families may find themselves in the position to consider adopting. We also cover the required steps of the process and supports that will be useful along the way. Finally, we recount challenges we’ve witnessed others experience and provide helpful hints that may make your family’s experience smoother. A mother, who adopted her nieces and nephews also shares her personal experience going through the process.

Trauma-Informed Parenting: Helping Heal the Deepest Wounds

Presented by Susan K. Taylor: Piedmont Coordinator, Consortium for Resource, Adoptive, and Foster Family Training (CRAFFT), Radford University.

Length of webinar: 1.5 hours

“All you need is love,” says The Beatles’ tune.  For kids with significant adverse childhood experiences, however, love may have resulted in just as much pain as protection.  Separated from their parents, the very same defenses that helped them survive then become a barrier to getting the love they need to thrive.  Caregivers are confused by the love/hate relationships traumatized youth have with them, affectionate one minute and rejecting the next.  It is easy to feel helpless and defeated when youth do not seem to trust the connection enough to drop their defenses, especially when situations escalate.  Before reaching the intersection of fatigue and frustration, however, we can take a different approach – TLC with TIP!  Let’s explore what it looks like to give the tender, loving care kids in foster care need with a trauma-informed parenting approach, and what it takes to hang in there when the loving gets tough!

Waiting in Adoption

Presented by: Erin Timmers, MSW, LISW, CH/LSS

Length of webinar: 1 hour

The excitement of beginning an adoption often overshadows some of the more difficult aspects of the process. However, as families progress through the various steps in their adoption, they become acutely aware of the reality that almost all adoptions involve some sort of wait time. While this wait can look different depending on individual situations and adoption programs, most families share in the experience of waiting in adoption to some degree. Through this webinar, we shed light on the often emotional and difficult process of waiting in adoption and offer suggestions for coping with and staying active throughout the wait.
