My name, My identity | A poem by a Korean adoptee

September 19, 2017 by Guest Contributor

A picture of Grace, who wrote a poem about her identity as a Korean adoptee.Cho Eun Jee.
Grace Sophia Gerlach.
Two languages,
Two countries,
Two cultures,
One me.
Two names,
Intertwined.
Eun Jee
Grace Wisdom
Eun is Grace,
Jee is Wisdom.
Cho Eun Jee.
Grace Sophia Gerlach.
My name is
My heritage.
My name is
My identity,
My soulmate,
Something I can never let go.
A place in my heart,
A constant reminder of
Who I am,
My friend.
One of two worlds,
A double meaning.
Two countries
On opposite sides
Of the world
Come together
With three words—
A name.
My ancestry,
Powerful.
One in 7.1 billion
Unique
But most of all…
It’s mine.

About the Author: Grace is a student at BlueSky Online High School and an adoptee from South Korea. She wrote this poem for a middle school English assignment. Grace was born in Seoul in 2002 and adopted when she was just 5 months old. She has two brothers who were also adopted from Korea, ages 17 and 5. In her free time, she enjoys doing gymnastics, reading, writing, and drawing, as well as doting on her two snakes and exploring the outdoors.
