Eleven-year-old “YF” recently spent a week with volunteers, Katie and Carly, in China through the Connect for Kids program. They loved spending time with him and described him as very sweet, gentle and smart.
“If you were to combine a teddy bear with a body guard, you would get YF. He holds up a wall like a body guard but once that wall is broken down he is a teddy bear, full of love to be shared!” Carly shared. YF has experienced a couple of heart breaks and so he guards himself until he is able to trust someone. But the volunteers noted: he has a lot of love to give—it just takes some time for him to warm up and build a trusting relationship.
“My favorite memory of YF was when he patted the chair next to him gesturing that he saved me a seat,” Carly recounted when thinking of how he warmed up to her with time.
“His gentle and kind spirit has him constantly looking out for everyone else around him,” shared Katie. He can always be found befriending others. During the week with the volunteer, YF enjoyed many local outings with the other children. One of his favorite days was at the zoo. There he was able to see his favorite animal—the lion, because it is so strong.
When describing his personality, Katie said, “He is outgoing but quiet. He may not show a lot of emotion, but internally, there is a lot to be said. He is very level-headed—never gets mad, keeps to himself, seeks approval, and follows the rules.”
YF shows a strong interest in reading, enjoys understanding how electronic devices work, and shows an attention to detail in his art work. Carly shared “YF is incredibly smart and a natural artist. He is fascinated by buses, trains, and airplanes and loves to show off his drawings of them. A true mystery man with many more hidden talents to still be discovered!”
