Hello!

My name is Amy. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter to get to know a little about me.

I have taught high school English for the last twenty years!

I currently teach honors English 10, after teaching Advanced Placement English 11, and seniors. I find my work enjoyable, rewarding, and, if I’m being totally honest, at times challenging. I feel fortunate to work with some truly wonderful, supportive colleagues and students.

Quick Hits About Me:

Favorite Book: Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Favorite Movie: The Goonies

Favorite Snack: Anything chocolate

Preferred Season: Fall

Faith: Lutheran

Education: Master’s Degree in Education

Hobbies: reading, gardening, watching movies, shopping, spending time with family & friends, being outdoors, puzzles, word finds, and taking pictures (landscapes mostly).

My Home

My home is located in a suburb outside of Minneapolis, MN. I am fortunate to have a fenced in backyard, nice neighbors, and a cute little park nearby. I purchased this house in 2015 because I saw the potential. My dad and brother renovated the entire house, eliminating the original pea green shag carpet!

My Path to Adoption

I have wanted to share my life for some time with a child. I had an amazing childhood, one I would re-live in a moment; it was wonderful! I want to create the same experience for my child.   I have five cousins who joined our family through adoption, so I have always felt it natural for me to adopt. Three of my cousins were adopted internationally, and two were adopted domestically. Their experiences, support, willingness to share their thoughts, emotions, and perspectives has, in my opinion, better prepared me for the path ahead.

My Family

My immediate family (including myself) is a family of four: my mom, dad, and younger brother. Both my parents are retired and looking forward to babysitting while I am at work.

As a family, we spend a lot of time at our cabin. My parents were fortunate to purchase our cabin when I was in junior high, so we have spent many years and have many memories at the same place.

Some cabin traditions include pancake breakfasts, boating, campfires, fishing, four-wheeling, and star gazing.

My extended family is quite large which makes family gatherings logistic acrobatics! My mom is one of nine kids and my dad is one of four kids. As one of the younger kids, I have had the advantage of watching and learning from my cousins as well as babysitting their children.

Below is a picture of my cousin (also a teacher) and me on Teacher Appreciation Night at the Varsity Hockey Game. We are fortunate enough to teach at the same school.

During one game each year, the hockey players each select a teacher who has influenced their education. We did not know the other had been chosen, so it was a surprise to see one another. We had a blast!

I feel very fortunate to have a good relationship with my students; these relationships benefit me and the students. I am a story-teller, and I share some of my personal experiences which can help them see (1) they are not the first person to have these experiences; (2) they will get beyond whatever it is they are going through; and (3) I care about what happens to them, and I worry about them. I have the advantage of being a “mom” at work when they feel they can’t talk or don’t want to talk to their parents.

Below, a student and I were goofing around after a long research unit. Everyone was exhausted and happy to be near completion (myself included).

We were testing different “model” poses while a third student played photographer!

Some closing thoughts

I believe it is important to discuss adoption and be open about it with a child from an early age. I plan on honoring and respecting your relationship with your child however that may unfold. Together, we will navigate this new journey.

Hopefully, this has given you a little glimpse of who I am. I want to wish you all the best regardless of whether you choose me.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Amy
