11 Things to Look Forward to at Adoption Day Camp

February 19, 2020 by kristina berg

As many parents know, it’s never too early to start making summer plans for your kids. With so many options, the choices can be overwhelming, but we think our Adoption Day Camp might be just the experience your family is looking for this summer! This unique camp blends traditional activities like archery and swimming with foster care and adoption-specific programming. It’s a great way for kids who were adopted and their siblings to enjoy the outdoors, get creative through arts and crafts, and bond with other adoptees.

Here are a few things your child(ren) can look forward to at camp this summer:

  1. Reconnecting with friends from last year! Many of our campers return year-after-year and look forward to seeing familiar faces and continuing to form lasting friendships
  2. Hanging out with the cool Junior Counselors. It’s always fun to have older kids to look up to, and our Junior Counselors are known for leading fun activities like making lanyards, bracelets, and more. If your child has completed 8th grade and is interested in becoming a Junior Counselor, contact [email protected] or call 651.255.2269.
  3. Experiencing the “black hole slide” at the YMCA. According to legend, this slide is an epic and extremely memorable part of the camp experience!
  4. Enjoying creativity and self-expression during art time. Kids can explore their creative side with fun art projects led by our experienced volunteers.
  5. Getting their first Adoption Day Camp t-shirt. This is a rite of passage for first-time campers who can proudly wear their Adoption Day Camp t-shirt year-round. For returning campers, adding a new t-shirt to their collection is always a highly anticipated part of the camp experience!
  6. Spending time in the great outdoors. Who can say no to an afternoon swimming or canoeing?
  7. Chatting with friends during picnic lunches. After being cooped up all winter, there’s nothing like a sitting outside on a warm summer day enjoying a picnic lunch and having a fun conversation with friends.
  8. Learning about new cultures. There is dedicated time devoted to learning about different cultures and customs. Last year African drumming was a big hit!
  9. Watching a “Fidgety Fairy Tales” performance. This re-imagined musical performance of familiar fairy tales raises awareness about children’s mental health issues with lively music and gentle humor.
  10. Hearing stories from adopted adults. Campers will have the chance to hear stories from adopted adults about their experience with adoption and identity. In this open conversation format, kids will also be able to ask questions.
  11. Building connections with other kids who were adopted. This camp helps highlight the connection that adopted kids and their siblings share and how much we can learn from one another

We hope to see you this summer at Adoption Day Camp!

Early-bird registration is open through February 29. Classes are filling up fast!
