As adoptive and foster parents, we know that our youth may need additional supports as they enter adulthood, but these supports are often hard to find and difficult to understand. Parents often “don’t know what they don’t know” and learn about options after the fact.
Join adoptive parents Martha Johnson and Katie Neumann as they discuss how parents can support youth transitioning to young adulthood. Topics will include, but are not limited to, educational and vocational choices, waivers, housing, and insurance options for youth who need more support after turning 18. If you are not currently parenting a teen, join us now to learn about options, and revisit this webinar when you need it in the future.
Martha Johnson (pictured left) is an experienced parent, who has learned many lessons from her children over 38 years of parenting. She worked as an educator in St. Paul for 28 years, and for many years, led monthly parent support groups for the North American Council on Adoptable Children. Martha now creates professional development and coaching experiences for parents and educators on the topics of Trauma Informed Best Practices, Mindfulness and Movement, Social Emotional Learning, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Service-Learning, and Language Immersion Programs.
Katie Neuman has been a foster, adoptive, and kinship parent in central Minnesota for 20 years, and is part of the “large family club,” with 14 people who call her “Mom.” Katie has worked for more than two decades as a special education substitute teacher. She also has over 15 years of experience in private case management support planning with disability services. Currently, Katie is a Parent Support Specialist for Families Rising Minnesota and works with families at all stages and within all areas of foster, adoptive, and kinship parenting.
