(View All Foster Care & Adoption Classes Events)
This training is one of the first steps for all families planning to adopt from Minnesota foster care, regardless of the agency or county you plan to adopt through. This is also one of the first steps for all families planning to become foster care providers through CH/LSS. Our online two-day classes will familiarize you with children waiting to be adopted, the needs they commonly have, and the adoption process. You will also have the opportunity to listen to panels of adoptive parents and waiting or adopted teens.
Classes include two in-person classes and two required pre-recorded trainings, which you will complete on your own time. (You will receive links to the pre-recorded trainings after completing the in-person classes).
Topics we will cover include: an overview of the child welfare system, the impact of prenatal drug/alcohol exposure, grief, loss and separation, trauma, abuse and neglect, mental health needs, attachment, cross-cultural and transracial parenting, permanency needs of older youth, concurrent planning, experiences of foster parents, experiences of birth parents, visitation and maintaining connections.
To fulfill the education requirement, it is essential each prospective parent attend the entirety of each live webinar and complete the pre-recorded trainings prior to receiving certification. An agenda for your class series will be sent one week prior to attending.
