Rooted in Family

July 29, 2026 by Staff Contributor

A few years ago, Marianna and Daniel Weckman stepped into the role of kinship caregivers for Daniel’s niece and nephew — Daniella and Felix — after learning the children’s home situation was declining. “Either we stepped in, or they were going to be lost to the state,” Daniel recalled. They made the decision to foster, and eventually adopt, the two children.

Marianna leaned heavily on Children’s Home’s support groups during this transition. She described the beginning of their parenting journey with a phrase that perfectly captures both the chaos and the courage of their decision: “parachuting gracefully.” The organization also provided essential supplies for Daniella and Felix. “The kids got to pick out their own comforter for their bed,” Marianna remembered. “It reminds us of how much of a gift Children’s Home is,” Daniel added.

One of the most emotional parts of the adoption process was the children’s decision to legally change their names. Daniel admitted it was difficult at first — he had known them by their birth names — but over time, he adjusted. “They’re becoming the adult versions of themselves,” he said proudly. To honor all his children, Daniel carries their names with him permanently as a tattoo on his leg symbolizing the family they have built.

When reflecting on why they chose to adopt Daniella and Felix, Daniel’s answer is simple and unwavering: “This is what we were meant to do.” And when asked what he would tell others considering foster care or adoption through Children’s Home, his advice is crystal clear: “Go for it.”
