Meet Eddie: An Adventurous, Easy-Going Seventh Grader

February 1, 2023 by Emily Cain

Teen Caucasian boy in navy blue hoodie standing by window. Meet Eddie, an adventurous, easy-going, and thoughtful 13-year-old. As a seventh grader, Eddie’s favorite school activity is gym class, especially swimming. He looks forward to swimming every week and being active on a regular basis.

“Eddie likes to be outside as much as possible,” says Jason, his Child Specific Recruiter. “An ideal weekend would include a walk through the woods, fishing on a river or lake, and rock collecting (he is an avid rock collector!).”

Spending plenty of time in nature is very important to Eddie! In addition to searching for rocks to add to his collection, he loves going for hikes and swimming in lakes and rivers.

Eddie also enjoys listening to music on YouTube and playing Minecraft or other video games. He is a naturally curious person and enjoys learning new things and going to museums.

Building with Legos is one of his favorite indoor activities. “Eddie is incredibly creative and can create massive structures with Legos that are pleasing to the eye and functional,” says Jason. “He has goals about which massive Lego sets he wants to get once he gets a job and can earn his own money. He has a sizeable collection that he can take with him!”

When thinking about Eddie’s ideal home environment, Jason says, “He would thrive in a one or two-parent home and is open to a family with a mom and a dad, two moms, or a single mom. I can see Eddie doing well in both a rural or suburban setting. There can be other kids in the home but preferably he would be the oldest. He would like to stay in the Duluth area if possible but is open to other areas of the state. Eddie likes cats and dogs and is gentle and caring with pets.”

Eddie can be anxious in unfamiliar settings, so any adoptive transition would require constant evaluation to see how to make him the most comfortable. “It is important for Eddie to be heard throughout the process and for him to have a voice in decisions that affect his life,” says Jason.

Eddie is looking for stability and a family that will be there for him through the highs and lows. Eddie is a truly amazing kid. I admire Eddie because even though he has been through a lot over the last few years, he still is able to remain optimistic about the future and cares about other people. —Jason Hirsch, Child Specific Recruiter

Eddie continues to have a relationship with his dad, and his future family should be able to help him maintain this relationship through in-person visits. His dad lives in the Duluth area and would be willing to drive to a placement or to a halfway spot to visit. He currently visits every other weekend. Eddie also has a younger sister who has been adopted and who he wants to maintain contact with.

Overall, Eddie is looking for stability and a family that will be there for him through the highs and lows. He is excited about the prospect of living with fewer kids than he does at a group home but would be excited if he had adoptive siblings as well.

“Eddie is a truly amazing kid who can thrive in an adoptive setting,” says Jason. “I admire Eddie because even though he has been through a lot over the last few years, he still is able to remain optimistic about the future and cares about other people. Eddie would be a great addition to a family.”

Details to Note

Due to contracts with the Minnesota Department of Human Services, the cost of adopting a child from Minnesota foster care is virtually free to families.
