South Korea Post Adoption

시작이 반이다 — Starting is Half the Task, Korean Proverb

We are happy to provide Korean post adoption services to adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive parents whose adoptions were completed by Children’s Home or LSS. In addition, our birthland tour, Tour Korea, is available to individuals and families, regardless of placing agency.

Birthland Journey to South Korea

Birthland travel helps connect internationally adopted persons with a sense of history and culture and can be especially significant when shared with loved ones. The travel experience involves the exploration of culture, traditions, historical landmarks, food and more in an adoptee’s country of origin.

Travel Support & In-Country Meetings

If you are interested in traveling with other adoptive families and adoptees and having a guided tour experience, Tour Korea can be a wonderful opportunity. If you are traveling to Korea independently, we can offer the following services:

Standard Travel Package

  • Arrange for you to stay at your Korean adoption agency guesthouse
  • Coordinate a tour of your Korean adoption agency
  • Arrange a meeting to review your adoption file at the Korean agency
  • Schedule a meeting with your foster family, if available

Additional Services (availability dependent on individual case information)

  • Meet with located birth family members
  • Coordinate a visit to your birth place
  • Coordinate a visit to your orphanage

Birth Family Search Services

Adopted adults, age 19 or older, or parents of adopted minors can initiate a search for birth parents. As part of this process, we facilitate the exchange of any available genetic or medical information and provide support to all individuals involved in the search process. Your social worker will speak with you about your motivations to search, the range of possible outcomes, and provide access to support systems during your search and outreach journey.

Correspondence with Located Birth/Foster Family

We can serve as an intermediary between adopted persons and located birth family and/or foster family members by facilitating ongoing correspondence.

U.S. File Review & File Copies

Adopted adults or adoptive parents of adopted minors can request that their Korean agency adoption file be reviewed for background information or checked for updates or requests for contact from birth parents. Copies of certain documents from the U.S. adoption file may also be requested. Due to data privacy laws, document copies may be redacted. All requests are subject to Minnesota Post Adoption information release laws.

Note: You may apply to our Adoption Support Fund to cover fees associated with your service(s).

Family Support Coach for Foster Adoptive Families

You may apply to our Adoption Support Fund to cover fees associated with your service(s)

We do not want the fees for services to be a hinderance to individuals looking for post adoption support. Please contact us to inquire about our Adoption Support Fund grants for individuals adopted through Children’s Home & LSS. Applicants are evaluated based on financial criteria including need, income ($100,000 gross income or less with a $10,000 deduction for each child in the home), expenses, assets, and debts. Grants typically range from $70 – $3,000. Please contact Kristina Berg for an Adoption Support Fund application.
