We are so grateful you’re taking a moment to learn about us. We’ve been building a life together rooted in love, laughter and a deep commitment to family, community, and showing up for the people we care about. We just feel like we are missing one more person in our lives—a child of our own. Becoming parents is something we’ve dreamed about for a long time, and we are ready to take that next step.

Our Life Together

Our home is filled with conversation, music, and affection—both for each other and for our animals we lovingly call the “family farm”. We have an affectionate dog, Opal, a squirrelly cat, Humphrey, and five very spoiled chickens. We live in South Minneapolis in a cozy house with a fenced backyard perfect for playing, gardening, and relaxing. One of our favorite things about our neighborhood is being able to walk to Minnehaha Falls where we often spend time outdoors recharging and imagining future family adventures. While we love our time at home, we also value time out with friends at concerts, parties and community events. A child brought up in our home will never have a lack of things to do or adventures to go on.

Who We Are

Colin is a civil rights lawyer who believes deeply in fairness, kindness, and standing up for others. His work reflects his values, and those values carry into how he shows up as a partner, friend, and future parent. Derek is a flight attendant who brings warmth, adaptability, and a sense of adventure wherever he goes. He has a gift for making people feel welcome and cared for, and his job has strengthened his ability to stay grounded, patient, and attentive. We feel strongly about giving back so volunteerism will be a core tenant of our child’s upbringing. Derek spent nearly 3 years teaching English in West Africa with the Peace Corps and Colin regularly does volunteer work through his job.

Our Community

We are socially active and deeply connected to our community. Over the years, we’ve built a strong “village” of supportive parents, siblings, friends, neighbors, and chosen family—people who are already excited to love and support a child. We value having a diverse group of friends and our child will have more extended aunties and uncles than they will know what to do with.

A Life of Curiosity & Adventure

Travel and exploration outside our comfort zones is extremely important to us. Derek’s job has allowed us to visit places we never thought we would and to experience many diverse cultures outside our own. We’ve visited Asia, Europe and Latin America in the past few years and have collectively lived in France, New Zealand and Namibia. These experiences have shaped our curiosity and respect for different cultures. We’ve developed a desire to raise a child who is open-minded, compassionate, and confident in who they are.

As Parents

If we are lucky enough to become parents, our child will grow up in a home filled with unconditional love, safety, encouragement and joy. We believe in listening, nurturing individuality, and creating a space where a child always knows they belong—exactly as they are. We can’t wait to read bedtime stories, cheer at school events, explore parks and museums, and build family traditions.
