How to Begin Your Adoption or Foster Care Journey During a Pandemic

May 18, 2020 by Emily Cain

The past few months have been overwhelming, to say the least. Adapting to new schedules and routines, experiencing an increased sense of anxiety about the future, and the sudden postponement or cancellation of long-anticipated life events are just a few of the challenges we are all facing during these uncertain times. While it can feel like the world has been turned upside down, we want to assure you that CH/LSS is continuing our work to provide safe, happy, and healthy homes for children—just as we have been for over 130 years.

YES! You Can Begin Your Adoption or Foster Care Journey (Even During a Pandemic)

Now more than ever, children deserve and are in need of safe, loving, and supportive families. Although we are working from home, we have an abundance of resources and services available to assist you as you begin your foster care or adoption journey.

You can attend virtual meetings, submit your Application Part 1, and even complete your home study—all while keeping social distance. The Minnesota Department of Human Services has allowed our social workers to connect with families through virtual outlets instead of having face-to-face interactions. We can protect our staff and our prospective families through these virtual meetings. When virtual visits are not possible, as is the case for some international programs, we have provided staff with PPE to have a safe, socially distant visit.

Lisa Trinh, a Waiting Child Specialist, encourages families to reach out with questions and spend time reviewing the information available on our website. “We have a wealth of informational webinars available for free on our website that cover a range of topics related to adoption and foster care. Our resource page is also extremely helpful and highlights a lot of great organizations that you will be utilizing throughout the journey.” She also strongly recommends connecting with other adoptive parents, adoptees, and foster families. “They are the true ‘experts’ in this journey, and hearing their stories may help be the catalyst to get you moving forward.”

If you’re ready to get started, don’t delay! Join one of our free online information meetings to learn about all of our program options.
